‘Lockdown’ as the name implies is a complete lockdown imposed on the usual movement of the general population of a place. A lockdown can be localized or applied over a wide area, depending on the purpose.

Lockdown in India

The government of India imposed a countrywide complete lockdown, beginning from the midnight of 25th March 2020 to 14th April 2020. During these 21 days of lockdown, trains except freight trains will not run; no transport buses will run neither any private office will open. Lockdown was implemented all over the country; however, emergency services have to run as usual.

The decision of lockdown was taken to prevent the spread of coronavirus pandemic and to stop it from getting down the top community level.

The lockdown is indeed necessary to contain the spread of an epidemic, which is highly contagious; however, it has several impacts on a number of issues as described below.

Impacts of Lockdown

  1. On Novel Coronavirus Disease

This is the most significant and most desirable impact of the lockdown. The novel coronavirus is highly contagious, spreading fast from person to person. Lockdown makes social distancing effective; prohibiting human to human contact at the highest level possible. This social distancing helps a lot in containing the spread of the disease.

  • On The Economy

A countrywide lockdown isn’t good for the economy and is a setback for economic growth and development of the nation. With transport suspended, railways and road transport agencies suffer losses to the tunes of crores. Small businesses and daily wage laborers are the most affected; nevertheless, lockdown is also important keeping in mind the health and life of the citizens.

  • On Pollution Level

This is a significant positive impact of the lockdown. With all types of transport being suspended and also the people being forbidden from roaming unnecessarily, the air quality index improves drastically. The change is significantly felt within a day or two of the lockdown. This change comes as a respite from the pollution which has become a global concern.

  • On Emergency Services

Lockdown is good for the emergency services and the personnel in a way that doesn’t put additional stress on them. With no traffic and rush like usual days, their job becomes extremely easy and convenient. They can easily tend to the needy and attend to the affected more efficiently.

Conclusion

Lockdown is very necessary for containing the coronavirus epidemic and preventing it from spreading into the community level. Despite its negative impacts; lockdown is very important and is only for the safety of the people.
